Today Sarah, Luis and I went to have a mold made of Luis's head as the first step in the treatment of his positional plagiocephaly (flat head). They will use this mold to make a DOC-band helmut for Luis to wear - which will encourage his head to grow where it's flat.
For the casting, they put a netting over his entire head, with a cutout for his mouth and nose. They then applied these glue-y bandage like strips to his head which set up very quickly to the shape of his head.
The cast is actually done in two pieces. They pulled the back half off, then cut the netting to get the front of the mold off. Lastly, the tech put the two pieces back together again. They'll use this to make a life-size mold of Luis's head.
