Having happy helpers at home when settling in a foreign country is one of the best assets one can get. At the beginning our maids would came saying that they will quit the job because they "did not get used to..." After almost a dozen maids in one year we learned that "not getting used to" meant to say "I feel that my salary is not an improvment over what I am used to get". So, in Peru, we learned to hire better helpers with good salaries, privately fixed in dollars but paid in local currency as per the exchange rate each end of the month. With devaluation soaring their salary was well protected. They felt happy. Consequently we got reliable, constant and loyal help.
